Thus, to counterbalance the more artistically high- minded portions of the film, Snow White also made use of thoroughly accessible musical forms derived from a decidedly American popular idiom. Always aware of his audience, however, Disney also banked upon animation's appeal as light entertainment for the masses-an especially salient issue considering the Depression- fueled escapism that significantly informed how much seriousness could be tolerated in Hollywood films of the 1930s. By calling upon tropes of such highbrow European- derived artistic forms as melodrama, operetta, and symphonic Romanticism, Disney’s music team invited the elite connotations that these genres held, thereby showing that animation could support more than just superficial cartoon silliness and in fact produce something of high artistic value. The studio had to demonstrate that animation could serve as a viable medium for long- form entertainment to do so, they had to set their film apart from the frenetic comical whimsy typical of the cartoon shorts that dominated the field. As the world’s first feature- length animated musical, Disney'’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) had a good deal to prove.
